What Is a Scaffold Tag and How Does a Scaffold Tagging System Work?

Introduction
In the steel jungle of a construction site, there is a seemingly insignificant small item that, despite its small size, is crucial for the safety of countless workers. It is the Scaffold Tag – a safety status sign hung on the scaffolding. Although most outsiders have never noticed its existence, in the global field of construction safety management, the scaffold tag system has long become an indispensable “safety language”. This article will take you to understand the full picture of this system: what it is, how it works, and why it continues to evolve in the era of digitalization.
1. What is a scaffold tag?
A scaffold tag, also known as a scaffold safety tag (Scaffold Safety Tag) or Scafftag, is a visual safety identification device installed at key entrances of the scaffolding. Its core function is to provide real-time information to all on-site personnel about the safety status of the scaffolding – including whether the inspection has been completed, whether it can be safely used, and whether special attention is required, etc.
In simple terms, the scaffold label is like the “health certificate” of the scaffolding: Before workers start working, they just need to glance at the color of the label to determine whether this scaffolding is safe to step on.
A complete scaffold label usually contains the following key information:
Unique Identification Number: Used for tracking and managing each group of scaffolding structures
Inspection Date: The time of the latest safety inspection
Inspector’s Signature: The name of the “Qualified Person” (competent individual) who conducted the inspection
Load-bearing Grade: Light, medium, or heavy load-bearing capacity
Safety Status: Indicated by color coding for intuitive display
Installation/Maintenance/Dismantling Personnel Information: Records all responsible parties who have come into contact with the structure
“The essence of the scaffold label is not a sign, but a set of safety communication mechanisms.” — A long-standing consensus in the international scaffolding safety field.
2.. How does the support label system work?
The support label system is not simply about “putting up a sign”. Instead, it is a complete closed-loop management process that includes installation, inspection, update, and tracking. Here is the standard operation mode of this system:
Step 1: Installation of Permanent Supports
At the beginning of the scaffolding construction, the staff will permanently install a label support at all legal entry points (such as ladders, stairs, main passageway frames). This support itself has a prominent “Do Not Use” warning message, indicating that no one is allowed to use the scaffolding until it has been inspected and a qualified label has been obtained.
Step 2: Professional Inspection
A team of qualified personnel who have received training will conduct a comprehensive inspection of the scaffolding. The inspection covers the following aspects:
Structural stability and foundation support
Status of connecting components and fasteners
Platform laying and integrity of guardrails
Load-bearing capacity assessment
Are there any wear, corrosion or deformation
